Family law experts, Crisp & Co, have released a free online ‘Relationship Red Flags Quiz’ which could reveal several toxic traits for thousands of relationships, in preparation for No More Week 5th - 12th March.

Crisp & Co have designed a quiz that aims to highlight problematic behavioural traits, to reveal potential “red flags” within any relationship. The aim is to freely provide a better understanding of toxic traits that could ultimately lead to domestic violence, or be classed as abusive, coercive, or controlling.

The quiz has been released in time for No More Week - an annual opportunity to raise awareness of domestic abuse and sexual violence across the globe. The aim is to inspire organisations and individuals to make a change.

Crisp & Co offers legal protection for domestic abuse survivors, so are interested in helping wherever possible.

Unfortunately, many people in abusive relationships may not even recognise their predicament. That said, recognising abuse when you see it is one of the first steps toward potentially escaping what could become a catastrophic situation.

The quiz is made up of a series of 18 “yes” or “no” questions. Some questions that can be expected to come up include:

  • Do you find that your partner constantly criticizes everything that you do?
  • Does your partner constantly minimise and downplay your accomplishments
    and aspirations?
  • Has your partner ever told you that you’re too sensitive or overreacting?
  • Does your partner ever dissuade you from seeing/speaking to friends or
family, causing a sense of isolation?

If the user answers “yes” to any of the queries, they will be given a brief description of why that specific “red flag” is ringing alarm bells. Then, at the end of the quiz, the user will be given a report which shows the percentage of answers that threw up “red flags”.

It is important to note that it will not definitively state that anyone is in an abusive or coercive relationship, only that their relationship may exhibit some key signals that are potentially alarming.

The quiz also provides helpful resources for any users who may be in an abusive, coercive, or controlling relationship. What’s more, there is an option to leave the Site immediately to ensure the safety of anybody who may be in a violent relationship.

Crisp & Co understand that signs of domestic violence and narcissistic behaviour can be hard to recognise in some situations. Manipulation tactics can often manifest slowly and inconspicuously. Many people in these relationships do not recognise their predicament or may feel unable to escape. Equally, men in abusive relationships may feel embarrassed to seek help or speak out.

Anuradha Kurl, Senior Associate at Crisp & Co, says, “One of the first steps to tackling issues within a relationship is recognising the signs of domestic violence and abuse. Often, victims are lulled into a false sense of security before tactics begin.

“One in four women are affected by domestic abuse, and one in three domestic abuse victims are male. Recent headlines have raised concerns that not enough is being done for this continuing problem. We hope this quiz - which can be done discreetly - might help shed some light on troubling behaviours, and provide explanations and guidance on the next steps to take, whether that’s legal help or not.

“Basic understandings of manipulation tactics can also help others spot signs in relationships close to them. It could be that a person recognises traits in family or friend’s relationships who could then offer help.”

Crisp & Co provide specific services for victims of domestic violence and abuse, which can help victims get protection from their partner. They are also able to assist anyone who feels they would like to end a marriage, whether it be due to domestic violence and abuse or not.

If you require legal assistance and guidance surrounding any family law enquiries, including protection from abuse or divorcing an abusive partner, head to the Crisp and Co website or call 0203 857 9885 for more information.

Please seek support via the domestic abuse helpline, or call 999, if you are in immediate danger.
