Looking to save on energy, food, transport and Christmas this winter? Find out more in our guide filled with money-saving tips and tricks.

Use energy more purposefully

Energy is the expense that many families have to keep an eye on throughout winter. The energy price cap has just gone up at the start of October 2024, so it’s important to find ways to use electricity and gas more efficiently.

Using energy with purpose is a good way to think about it. Reserve it for the times when you need it most. This is usually early in the morning and when you get home in the afternoon or evening.

Simple tricks can also make a big difference. Consider draught-proofing doors and windows, turning your thermostat down a few degrees and investing in some thick winter clothing and cosy blankets to reduce your energy consumption. A hot water bottle is a must for those cold nights, too!

Cut food shopping costs with meal planning

Winter is the time for big, hearty meals, but they don’t have to cost an arm and a leg. In fact, you can make them for a lot cheaper with some simple meal planning, the right ingredients and a few other handy tricks.

Before you go shopping, decide what meals you’re making for the week and write an ingredients list. This should help you avoid frivolous and impulsive spending but also reduce the headache of shopping without a plan.

Explore some new meal options and cooking methods this winter. One-pot meals are easy and cheap, and can be made in bulk to be more cost-effective. Buy individual ingredients and cook rather than relying on ready-made meals – it’s cheaper and healthier.

Slash your transport costs

Fortunately, as of October 2024, petrol prices have fallen to their lowest rate since 2021. While this will provide some welcome relief for many motorists heading into winter, there are other ways to save on the cost of travel.

Despite lower pump prices, it’s still worth driving smoothly for better efficiency. This sort of driving is also safer in poorer driving conditions. And it’s still worth considering if you can walk or take public transport for certain journeys to cut your fuel consumption.

In terms of car insurance, always shop around for the best deals when it's time to renew. Opt for a multi-car insurance policy if you have multiple vehicles registered in your household. You should be able to save on the cost overall and make things much simpler.

Budget your money for Christmas

Christmas is a special time, but it shouldn’t break the bank. As we approach the festive period, start putting some money away and consider how much you’re looking to spend.

Create a budget including the cost of presents, travel, Christmas dinner and other expenses. With everything written down, you might be able to find a few areas to save.
