The Benefits of a Skincare Routine for Children
Dr Amina Albeyatti, Founder of Troikin, has given us some great information on the The Benefits of a Skincare Routine for Children
Key benefits of a Skincare routine in children
- Daily moisturising in the day and night improves the skin barrier and therefore leads to less inflammation and skin infections.
- Daily SPF will reduce the damage to young venerable skin to reduce inflammation, acne, pigmentation, scarring and skin disease in the future.
- A daily routine is the best way to empower a child to look after their largest organ and give it the love and attention it needs
- Children love to copy their parents – so if you have a skincare routine – it’ll be easier for your child to pick up and maintain…and if you don’t have a skincare routine yet, this is the time to start.
- Being mindful of your skin’s health with a daily routine means a child will also be more involved when their skin feels unwell and more engaged in treatment and health improvement in the future
- Healthy skin promotes a healthy and happy child with less need for medical intervention and better self esteem.
Why does my child need a good skincare routine?
- Itchy, inflamed and irritated skin can cause children physical and mental distress. Research shows that such uncomfortable and sore skin can increase anxiety & depression in children as well as negatively impact their self-esteem.
- Physically itchy and sore skin can disturb sleep, increase the risk of skin infections from scratching and time off school – which can impact future school grades dramatically
- A sensible skincare routine with moisturisers and active ingredients for soothing such as Oat extract has been shown to reduce the need for medical intervention for steroids and antibiotics. A great example of a moisturizer for children with these benefits is Troikin Nightology Night cream. Aveenoalso has Oat extract for a thicker body moisturiser.
- The key to a sensible skincare routine is consistency. For children this means they need to be engaged in the process. Easy to use products and packaging to allow the child to apply the skincare everyday and every-night is key – like brushing their teeth.
- We can learn a lot from the research in the dental industry, which has spent years developing their health initiatives for children to reduce tooth decay and gum disease. They found that encouraging a child from the age of seven to be responsible for the health of their teeth empowered them to be more health conscious and more open to further health advise in the future. Therefore it is sensible to do the same for our largest organ – our Skin.
- Using skincare designed for children empowers children to take ownership of their skin health – Like Troikin or Petite co which is super engaging for children.
- Preventing skin disease is easier than curing it. Dermatitis revolves around a broken skin barrier, which can be avoided with daily moisturising, SPFwhilst out during the day to reduce further damage and washing with soap and water less.
- Children skin is much more venerable to the damage from UVA and UVB rays from the sun. 80% of all lifetime damage will occur before your 18th birthday. A child only needs 5 sunburns to double their risk of skin cancer.
- Skincare needs to also be used when out or at school as SPF needs to be topped up every 2-4 hours. Just like the water bottles are ids love to take to school to top up their internal hydration their skin also needs a quick top-up at lunchtime or after games. Troikin’s Self Esteem offers light hydration with SPF 40 & vitamin C in an easy to use no spill pump.
- Looking to the teen years and beyond sensible daily SPF and moisturising will reduce the incidence of acne, pigmentation, signs of aging, dull skin and most importantly – Skin Cancer
- Skin cancer such as Melanoa is unfortunately one of the most common cancers in young adults. This is especially sad as it is preventable in most and its treatment is both disfiguring with deep surgical scars and difficult with chemotherapy in some instances.
- As we said prevention is always better than a cure – we spend so much time and money in our 20s, 30s and beyond to repair the damage made to our skin when we were young and try to reverse the signs of aging with lotions, potions and injections – teaching your child to look after their skin is a great investment into their future.
