Number tracing with paints activity
My daughter absolutely loves painting, so I thought what better way to teach her numbers than through a finger painting activity? This activity was super easy and your children won’t even know they are learning at the same time.
What you will need:
- Paints. We always make sure we use washable paints as my daughter always ends up totally covered!
- Painting apron
- Pieces of paper with some numbers written on in pencil.
What to do:
Encourage your child to use their fingers to paint along the lines of the numbers. Talk about the numbers that you are currently painting to help your child recognise them and get used to how they are formed. Remember that children learn best through repetition so when you are starting out you may want to have lots of versions of the same numbers.
Ways to adapt or add on to the activity
- If you are having lots of cards with the same number on, you can get your child to group all of the same numbers together.
- Number ordering – when the paints have all dried you can get your child to put the number cards in a number line, putting the numbers in the right order.
- Writing the numbers themselves – As your child gets a bit older you can get the children to write out the numbers themselves, before painting over them.
- Make your own number cards – When the painted cards are all dry you can laminate them and use them as number cards. These can then be used for other activities where they are learning about counting and numbers.
- Make some number bunting – Like above, you can laminate the number cards then attach them to string and put them up somewhere in the house.
