3 ways to learn about adding and subtracting with duplo blocks
Playing with duplo blocks is a creative way to learn a variety of new skills like addition and subtraction! Your child will love the vibrant colours and bold shapes of duplo blocks, which make them perfect for any learning environment. Maths isn’t always the most exciting subject for kids. To make it more appealing for them, they need to have fun while learning. Here is my top list of activities that kids will get stuck into, and I can assure you that they are helping with their maths at the same time!
- Using individual blocks stacked on top of eachother to make different sums. By using singular blocks your child will be able to count the blocks to help them work out the answer.
- Write numbers on the blocks to make your sums. I numbered some of our singular blocks, 1-100, which took quite a lot of time initially but has really paid off! There are so many ways you can use numbered blocks (you can see some more ways here) but creating sums was one great way. I added a few plus, minus and equals signs to some other blocks and layed out the sum in a row (see the youtube video of how I did this below). My son is car mad so we made this even more of a game by setting out the sum, then I put the blocks with 3 possible answers near the sum. My son then used his digger to pick the right answer and put it at the end of the sum.
- Make numbers out of duplo blocks to create your sums. My children loved this and it really got their logical and creative skills flowing. Obviously making the number 1 shape out of duplo is really easy, but some of the other numbers can be really challenging, which really ignites children’s logical and creativity skills.
