We had a rare teacher training day this week, so, along with some friends, we decided to pack up a picnic, our bikes, and a change of clothes and head out to the River Dart Country Park for the day.

Location

Nestled within the stunning Dartmoor National Park, the River Dart Country Park is conveniently located just half an hour from Exeter, easily accessible off the A38. For those of you nervous about driving in the Dartmoor Country lanes, don't fear, the park is just on the edge of Dartmoor so it's not far to go.

First Impressions

The setting is absolutely breathtaking! We visited on a cold but sunny March day, and the views were so picturesque they almost seemed unreal. The park is enveloped by lush trees, and the crystal-clear River Dart meanders gracefully through the grounds.

There was so much to see and do we were all excited to explore this new place. Our group consisted of four adults and eight children, ranging in age from 3 to 10 years old. The park’s facilities catered to everyone, ensuring a really fun experience for all ages.

Activities We Enjoyed

            •           Low Ropes Area: Our adventure began near the car park at the high ropes section. Here, we discovered an impressive assault course featuring various climbing and balancing challenges. The area also boasted a big swing and a drop slide, providing endless fun for the children and some daring adults.

            •           Adventure Playground: We cycled to the expansive adventure playground, where we paused for playtime and a picnic. This large area included a dedicated toddler section, complete with a mini zip line equipped with a toddler swing seat, ensuring the little ones could safely join in the excitement. The playground was full of forts, obstacle courses, and climbable trees. Ample picnic benches and open spaces were available for those preferring picnic blankets.

            •           Bike Track: After lunch, we ventured to the bike track. Its design was easy enough for the younger members of our group while still being lots of fun for the older children.

            •           Pirate Ship and Natural Pool: A highlight of the park was the play area featuring a natural pool and a big wooden pirate ship. Our children loved crossing a wooden plank over the water to board the ship, adding an adventurous twist. Additionally, a small island with a slide leading into the water and a water-based obstacle course with tires and swings were there. Despite the chilly weather, some of our brave youngsters donned wetsuits and fully immersed themselves in the fun. I sat myself at one of the numerous nearby picnic benches, ready with towels and hot chocolates for when they emerged.

This area also featured a sandy beach section and another climbing frame. Although the food and drinks kiosk was closed due to the off-peak season, it appeared to offer a variety of options during busier times. One thing most of us parents commented on was how the toilets and changing rooms were impressively clean and well-maintained, a nice surprise as such facilities in outdoor adventure parks can often be challenging to upkeep.

Activities We Missed

We felt we only scratched the surface of what the park has to offer and are eager to return to explore more. Other activities available include:

            •           Dare Devil Activities: The park has instructor-led activities like a Mega Zip Wire, High Ropes Course, Climbing, Caving, Canoeing, and Kayaking. You do need to pay extra for some of these activities so make sure you look online to double check the cost and prebook to avoid disappointment.

            •           Dartmoor Bike Park: There is an impressive Freeride Area, designed by ex-pro BMXer Kye Forte. It has four runs graded from blue to orange, catering to various skill levels. Booking this is essential, so make sure you head to the website and book your slot for this before your visit.
