We have had so much fun with our tuff tray over the holidays and this Farmyard tray was a huge hit. Part of the fun for my children was actually creating the farmyard scene with me.

What is a tuff tray?

A tuff tray is a large heavy duty plastic tray. The tray is generally octagonal shaped with raised sides that are perfect for containing different materials. Tuff trays are perfect for indoor or outdoor use and can be used for so many different activities for children – particularly the messy ones.

What can you put in a tuff tray?

For this farmyard activity we used:

  • Rice that we had dyed green with green paint
  • Small world farm yard toys
  • Cereals, including weatabix, cornflakes, coco pops and porridge oats.

How do you put the tuff tray together?

We started off by talking about what animals we wanted to use and how many different sections we needed for them. My children wanted 4 sections, so we divided up the tray into quatres, then filled those quatres with the different materials (e.g the coloured rice and cereals). We then placed the animals in each section and added a few things like a play barn, some fences and some trees and we were ready to go. This tray actually stayed intact for over a week, making it our longest used tuff tray activity yet!

I hope you and your children have as much fun with this activity as we did. For more activity ideas click here.
