Five top tips for designing a harmonious children’s room with Little Folks Furniture

A child’s sleep quality is a crucial building block to their mental and physical wellbeing, and bedroom harmony is a great way to help encourage positive sleep patterns. So how can you best design a room that makes them feel comfortable? Christopher Lusty, Founder of Little Folks Furniture shares his top tips.

Captivating Colour Combinations

The underlying energy of a bedroom should be comfort and cosiness. A soft neutral base will inspire a feeling of calm while still allowing for pops of favourite shades to be added. Avoid bold primary colours or exuberant wallpaper as these can be too overstimulating. By introducing hues of green, soft lilacs or nature inspirited prints and wallpapers you will boost that sense of peacefulness by bringing hints of the outdoors in.

Furniture Placement
Balancing zones and objects, evenly distributing furniture, and focusing on keeping unoccupied spaces is key to creating a pleasing aesthetic and ensuring the room has plenty of places for daytime play! Putting a bed in ‘the command’ position – which means away from the line of the door, ideally diagonally and furthest away from it - allows your child to be in ‘command’ of their surroundings.

Mixed textures
Using a mixture of textures will give personality to your space and also help with relaxation. Layered blankets and cushions are a great way to do this quickly and easily and can be simply switched as their tastes change. You can also add in beanbags and futon chairs, or try knitted storage baskets for an extra homely touch.

Lighting
A healthy balance of dark and light will help avoid unnerving shadows and corners. Warm bulbs will cast a soft glow across the room and give a gentler wake-up as well as helping lull them to sleep. Plus it’s still bright enough for reading those bedtime stories! If you’ve designated an area for homework add a task light to help define the space and illuminate those important Q&As.

Floor Space
Children’s rooms can be short on space so it’s vital to get smart with the layout to maximise what’s available. Having simple ways to declutter and clear floor space is fundamental to maintaining a harmonious bedroom. Raised bed frames such as High sleepers give the option to tuck lots of furniture underneath, from desks to storage cubes and sofa beds. Mid sleepers are ideal for those looking for just a little extra as they can house drawers and bookcases, or alternatively leave a gap so you can slip your own storage in and out – this nook can also make a great den. Storage beds with trundles are an excellent option for hiding away favourite books, toys and trinkets come bedtime, and some can even transform into sleepover beds, perfect for all those guests you’ll have wanting to stay!
